Villa Levanda is the contemporary house on the estate, and it is built for indoor–outdoor living. Sweeping stone terraces and wide balconies give uninterrupted valley, mountain and sea views, with plenty of padded loungers around the private pool.
Elegant white-washed rooms, deliberately large, with vibrant artwork and photography by renowned and local artists on the walls, high wooden ceilings, and underfloor cooling and heating throughout. Swedish Dux beds, pure cotton bed linen, Rituals toiletries. The fish painting guests keep asking to take home is in this house. More photographs in the full Villa Levanda photo gallery.
Levanda shares the estate with the stone house, Elia. Both are on our Crete villas page, and our guide to villas in Chania sets them in the wider region.
Villa Levanda is the better choice if you want space and light. All three bedrooms are en-suite, which makes it the easier house for two or three couples sharing, and the master suite has a whole floor to itself. The 85 square metre living floor means a group of six is not living on top of each other on a rainy day, and the bigger pool is the one to pick if people actually want to swim rather than cool off.
Like Elia it is arranged over three floors with stairs and no lift, so it is not suitable for anyone with limited mobility. The beaches are a ten-minute drive and you will need a hire car. If you would rather have thick stone walls, deep shade and the older character of the estate — and a twin room that often suits families with younger children better — look at Villa Elia, the restored stone house. Guests who have stayed in both tend to say Elia holds the cool and Levanda holds the light. More on staying here with children in our guide to family villas in Crete, or on taking a whole house for two in villas for couples.
Beautiful spacious villa, tastefully furnished in light tones of white and grey. Enjoyed every corner, all the views from every balcony. And the pool is amazing. The village is lovely and the tavernas serve delicious food.
The photos do not do the place justice! The design and layout of the villa enables breathtaking views from every window, and the terraces and gardens allow you to escape the main pool area if you want some peace and quiet to read.
Villa Levanda is let by the week, minimum seven nights. Rates are per villa, based on four sharing, with a supplement of 50 Euros per night for the fifth and sixth guest. VAT and all taxes are included, along with the welcome basket, mid-week cleaning and linen change, all towels, toiletries, wifi and parking. Check-in is from 16h00 and check-out is at 11h00.
Yes, and it is not shared with Villa Elia. Villa Levanda’s pool is 10 metres by 5, 2 metres at its deepest, and treated with salt through an electrolysis unit rather than dosed with chlorine chemicals.
Six adults comfortably, across three en-suite bedrooms. Rates are based on four sharing, with a supplement of 50 Euros per night for the fifth and sixth guest. Prices for each season are on the rates page.
Yes, all three. The middle floor is a master suite with a walk-in wardrobe and its own terraces; the lower floor has a second master with an en-suite and private lounge, plus a third en-suite bedroom. Only the middle-floor bathroom has a bath as well as a shower.
Levanda is the contemporary house: all three bedrooms en-suite, an 85 square metre open-plan living floor, and the larger 10 by 5 metre pool. Villa Elia is the estate’s restored original stone house, with two en-suite masters plus a twin room with its own bathroom, and it stays notably cool in high summer. Both sleep six.
The pool is not deep enough for diving, the tiles are slippery when wet, and children and inexperienced swimmers need to be supervised at all times. There is a good supply of floats and pool toys. If you are travelling with very young children, ask us before you book and we will tell you exactly what is and is not in place. Travelling with children? See our family villas in Crete page.
Yes — central air conditioning with autonomous controls so each room can be set separately.
Ten minutes downhill to Gavalochori, where there are tavernas, a bakery and a village shop. Uphill on the way back. More on the village in our Gavalochori guide.
Almyrida and Kalyves, both sandy, are 4 to 6 kilometres away — about ten minutes by car. Our guide to the best beaches in Crete covers the rest of the coast.
Yes. The estate is uphill from the village and there is no practical bus service to the beaches.
Forty-five minutes by car. Heraklion airport is two hours, so fly into Chania (CHQ) if you can. Our guide to Chania airport transfers, car hire and getting to Gavalochori has more.
